OP-ED: Folks, It’s Spelled “Definitely”
In my time at the Heckler, I have tried to stick to hard-nosed, objective, investigative journalism, but today I feel it my duty to write from the heart. To all of you so-called “educated” Georgetown students, here is a newsflash for you. The word is spelled “definitely”. NOT “definately”. So if you spell it the wrong way, I honestly think you should not be in school – and if you are in school, I certainly hope you are a member of the first or second grade. I know this might sound a bit harsh to all of you bad spellers out there, but it is something that needs to be said. I also hate bad spellers. When I receive an email or letter that contains this gross distortion of the word, “definately” screams at me from the page, pleading that I throw it away immediately. I comply, because I know that whoever wrote the note is not smart. I appreciate your efforts to contact me, but just do me a favor and learn how to spell. Yes, I understand that our AOL culture has limited conversation to absurdities like “lol”, “gtg”, “brb”, and “ttyl”, among others. Still this is no excuse for “definately”, which should never be misspelled or abbreviated as “def.” Thank you. I hope this op-ed clears things up for people.
