New Georgetown Exam Schedule Condenses All Exams Into Single Two-Hour Session
On Friday, December 5, 2003, the last day of classes, the recently revised exam schedule was announced to the Georgetown student body. The much-anticipated and long-awaited revisions were designed to simplify studying periods for students, as well as provide maximum preparation and grading times for professors.
“It was long overdue,” said Rock Tonkel (SFS ’05), who spearheaded the campaign to improve the exam schedule. “Students were getting tired of waiting around, not certain when or where to show up and take their finals. And when they’re over, we don’t hear back from our professors until the final grades are out, and that’s not until January!”
The new format assigns all SFS, COL, MSB and NHS students to take their exams on Saturday, December 13, between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. During this time, students will be presented with all of their exams, and have the two-hour block to complete them. Professors of many departments at Georgetown are already lauding the changes, and have consequently begun collaborating with other departments and professors.
“It’s a very exciting new step,” says one art professor. “Since most of my students are in the business school, I’ve found their finance and accounting professors having them price high-valued, rare masterpieces. It’s truly a more accurate view of the real world, and these student’s lives outside of Georgetown.” Perhaps the most innovative changes involve the university’s foreign language departments. In order to make the two hours less stressful for students, foreign language exams have been removed from the exam packet, and instead, many students will be taking the remainder of their exams in the foreign language they are studying.
“I was already excited about my international law exam,” said Tonkel, “and now that I have to take it in Latin, I can’t wait to incorporate all of my skills.”
The idea of compressed finals has caught the attention of nearby schools, and may be instituted at places such as Howard and Catholic University as soon as next semester. However, for Georgetown students, they will be the first ever to try out this new system.
