Misprinted “Spirit of Georgetown” Banners Result in Widespread Interreligious Misunderstanding
By Otto Foots

CAMPUS — An effort to re-post around campus “Spirit of Georgetown” signs and banners, known for adorning campus during Orientation, was abandoned after the banners had resulted in pervasive instances of inerreligious ignorance and intolerance among the student population, starting with the defacement of the Mary statue on Copley Lawn and quickly escalating.  “We reprinted the banners because we had to use up some budget money,” said the Rev. Philip Boroughs, S.J., vice president in the Office of Mission and Ministry. “Once Catholic students declared a Crusade against Protestant and Muslim Hoyas and we had a few people get lanced, though, we realized that the banners had been misprinted to say that ‘Interreligious Misunderstanding’ was a Georgetown ideal rather than ‘Interreligious Understanding.’” After complaints from certain pro-Crusade, well-heeled alumni and money saved by reorganizing religious ministries into “Correct” and “Heathen,” however, the misprinted banners have been scheduled to go back up.
